This 13,000 sf waterfront facility was designed in close coordination with the environmental scientists and students who will use it. It is designed to house a Water/Soils laboratory, a
Forest Ecology/Glaciology/Geophysics Laboratory and a Field Research Staging Area and Shop. It also includes a SCUBA support facility, nine faculty offices, a seminar room, a classroom and a community area with an extensive covered outdoor space. Spaces are organized to sequester labs to the building interior and orient student and faculty spaces outward to enjoy natural light, ventilation and sweeping views of the bay. Design and construction oversight of this facility was led by Dave Hurley and document development by Ben Kraft. Our lab consultant was Jacobs. RESPEC was responsible for mechanical and electrical engineering, and PND for civil and structural engineering.
The Water/Soils Laboratory is designed as a flexible laboratory for faculty and undergraduate research in water and soils quality/ecology. It has benches, wall and tall cabinets, a fume hood with corrosion and flame-resistant base cabinets, sinks with RO water, cylinder restraints, and numerous pieces of owner provided analytical equipment including a TOC Analyzer, TOC Auto Sampler, Spectrophotometer, Vis,
Spectrofluorometer, Spectrophotometer, UV/Vis and Autosampler/Vaporizer. Two support labs complement the Water/Soils Lab: A Clean Room, designed as a trace metal laboratory with a polypropylene
fume hood /metal free cabinets for high acid and trace metal analysis and a balance table for weighing samples; and a Research Supplies Room, designed as a prep lab with ice machine, water polisher,
and owner supplied drying oven with canopy hood and a snorkel and a Freezer Room, equipped with ultra-low freezers, and chest freezers.
The Forest Ecology/Glaciology/Geophysics Laboratory is designed as a flexible laboratory for faculty and undergraduate research in environmental sciences. The lab has benches, wall and tall cabinets, wall shelving, a fume hood with corrosion and flame-resistant base cabinets, and a sink with RO water. Two support labs complement the Lab: A Dry Lab, designed to prepare samples for analysis, has an owner supplied muffle furnace with canopy hood, drying oven, and snorkel, and a Research Supplies Room, designed as a prep lab. The Field Research Staging and Shop is designed to assist scientists
with fi eld research. The room is equipped with lab benches, wall cabinets, and sink with hot, cold, & RO water, sediment interceptor, and eyewash for initial processing of field samples. There is plenty of storage space including movable compact shelving with individually lockable cage storage units. The space also has racks for personal field gear. It has direct access to a covered outdoor staging area equipped with a 90-gallon flammable safety cabinet, lockable cylinder storage cabinet, heavy duty shelf brackets on Unistrut, and a hose bib.
