Douglas Indian Association (DIA) Tribal Headquarters

Juneau, Alaska

NorthWind Architects was retained by the Douglas Indian Association (DIA) in Juneau to develop both their tribal headquarters office building in Juneau and their new cultural education center in Douglas. The office building completed in 2022 is comprised of Tribal Council meeting space added to the restoration of a prominent old-Juneau structure originally constructed in 1912. The historic structure was completely reconstructed from foundation to rooftop to meet commercial building requirements. The new and the old are in sharp contrast: The Tribal Council meeting room is highly visible, separated from the busy street only by storefront and a developed landscape, and is wrapped in heavy regionally sourced cedar planks. The offices are housed in the carefully reconstructed vernacular of the original building on the site. The objective of maximizing space built with available funding was uplifted by delivering a design representing clear and accessible leadership for the tribal community. 3300 sf.
